How Atonement Licensing was built — and why.

In 2014, our founding partners made a decision that cost them comfortable careers at global software vendors. They had spent a combined 60 years helping Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP design the commercial frameworks — the tiered pricing models, the audit playbooks, the renewal pressure tactics — that extract billions from enterprise buyers every year.

They understood the asymmetry. Vendors employ entire armies of commercial strategists dedicated to maximising revenue from each client relationship. Enterprise buyers, even Fortune 500 organisations, typically face these negotiations with a handful of IT procurement professionals who see one Oracle renewal every three years. The knowledge gap is not accidental. It is engineered.

Atonement Licensing was founded to close that gap permanently. We brought our insider expertise across the table and placed it entirely at the disposal of buyers. Every engagement since has operated on one immovable principle: we work exclusively for the buyer, accept no referral fees from vendors, and measure our success only in confirmed client savings.

Over twelve years and 500+ engagements, our team has grown to 11 former vendor executives covering every major software platform. The result is an advisory practice that vendors cannot replicate or co-opt — because our interests are permanently separated from theirs.

Our operating principles

Buyer-exclusive representationWe never accept vendor referrals, certifications, or commercial relationships that could compromise objectivity.
Quantified advice onlyEvery recommendation is supported by financial modelling and benchmark data. We do not advise on instinct.
Absolute confidentialityEngagement details are never disclosed. Your vendor cannot learn you are working with us unless you choose to disclose it.
Fee structures that align incentivesWe offer fixed-fee, retainer, and contingency arrangements. We only succeed when you save.
No system integrator dependenciesWe have no implementation revenues to protect. Our advice is never shaped by fear of damaging a vendor partnership.
What makes us different

Three pillars of our advisory practice

Insider Intelligence

Our consultants spent 10 to 22 years inside Oracle, Microsoft, SAP, AWS, and Google Cloud in senior commercial, pricing, and audit roles. We know how vendors model their discounts, design their audit triggers, and escalate renewal pressure — because we built those systems. That institutional knowledge is now deployed exclusively for buyers in every engagement we undertake.

The result: we enter every negotiation knowing the vendor's likely floor, their deal authorisation thresholds, and where they have genuine room to move — and where they are bluffing.

Commercial Rigour

Every engagement is built on quantified analysis. We deploy financial models, proprietary pricing benchmark databases covering 500+ transactions, and contractual analysis frameworks developed over a decade of real negotiations. Our recommendations are documented, defensible, and designed to withstand board-level scrutiny.

We do not advise on gut feel. We advise on evidence. When we tell your CIO that Oracle has 40% room on ULA pricing, we have the benchmark data to prove it and the negotiation plan to extract it.

Buyer Advocacy

We accept no referral fees from vendors. We hold no vendor certifications. We are not resellers, system integrators, or managed service providers with downstream revenue at stake. Our firm derives 100% of its income from client engagements, and our interests are permanently and structurally aligned with yours — not with the software industry.

This independence is not just our marketing position. It is our business model, and it is what makes our advice genuinely trustworthy in a landscape full of advisors who cannot say the same.
